This is going to get complicated, and because of that I suspect that the media-at-large will water it down to one issue of their chosing and expect people to latch onto it. For the sake of not letting someone set the parameters for us, I’m going to list what the primary issues are in this matter, and I’ll use those as the basis for follow-ups. This story may still just die, which I think would be unfortunate, but until then, let’s track it.
Issue 1: Did the CIA lie to congress?
If so, we need to know that they did, why they did, and if possible what they lied about. With the exception of the way-out possibility that they lied about something to mislead or misdirect purposely for the purposes of national security and then came clean, this can’t be let go.
Issue 2: Did Pelosi lie to the American people when she made her accusations?
This only matters if she said that she didn’t know about water-boarding when she actually did. I honestly wouldn’t much care either way, but she laid claim that she didn’t because CIA lied to her, and therefor we need to know the truth.
Issue 3: Are details and information coming out of the Intelligence Committee that are classified?
This is my primary complaint. Are people that are getting briefed in Congress then going out and talking about it? There is a reason there is a small committee that hears these briefings, and the briefings are classified. Take the letter that was sent to Panetta, in it there is reference to remarks made by Panetta in a briefing. If that is the case, someone needs to be charged with a crime here, because it is in fact a crime to release classified information.
I’m curious to see where this goes…
